Norman “Winono Mnomzane (Mr. Clean)” Steenkamp was born in 1963 in Wentworth. Norman Steenkamp’s love for soccer began at Merebank Primary School.

Norman Steenkamp initial played as a striker. In 1980 he was converted in to a defender whilst playing for the local premier league club Everton. In 1981 Steenkamp was selected to represent Southern Natal. It was at the Seven Seas inter-district tournament in Pietermaritzburg, that when Steenkamp caught the attention of Leeds. He made his professional debut, with Leeds in 1982. He later joined Amazulu FC.
