Professor Malegapuru William Makgoba, the Health Ombudsman (South Africa) who is the former Vice Chancellor of University of Kwa-Zulu-Natal and the Chair of the Transformation Oversight Committee of Public Universities has recently given the key opening for the Annual General Meeting for the first “Tackling Infections to Benefit Africa (TIBA)”, which was hosted in Durban at the Hilton Hotel, 29 – 31 May.

TIBA involves nine countries namely South Africa, Ghana, Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Rwanda, Uganda and aims to:

1) To improve the diagnosis and surveillance of infectious diseases in resource-poor settings.

2) To improve the deployment of existing drug treatments and enhance local capacity to develop new ones.

3) To improve the deployment of existing vaccines and enhance local capacity to develop new ones.

4) To improve the management of endemic and epidemic infectious diseases.
