2 pm – 6 pm

BAT CENTRE (45 Maritime drive)

Tickets R200

Keyboardist, percussionist, instrument maker, innovator Ndikho Xaba is also a 2011 eThekwini Living Legend Award winner.  He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease 10 years ago.  It has greatly curtailed his ability to perform and he now requires 24/7 nursing care. All monies raised will be used for his health care.  The celebration will celebrate his living legacy by hosting numerous bands, all of whom have a close connection with Baba’s innovative, creative work.  The UKZN Big Band (directed by John Kordalewski) will perform several of Baba’s compositions.  A host of other fine, talented musicians will also perform.  They include:

  1.  Prof. Salim Washingon Band

  1. Prof. Neil Gonsalves, keyboards

  1.  Mfana Mlambo – reeds

  1. Mama Nomusa – storytelling

  1. Feya Faku, reeds

  1. Sazi Dlamini Band

  1. Lou Dlamini Band

  1. Madala Kunene – guitar

  1.   Iza-Ngoma Band

  1. Richard Ellis, guitar

  1. Mikaela Chetty – vocals

At 1:00pm we will open the media room which will show vintage film of some of Baba’s performances –  We will also display and curate some of his hand crafted instruments.  So come early!

There will be a jam session at the end so feel free to bring your instruments.

The family asks that you do not take pictures or videos during the celebration.  We will have designated photographers to document this most historic event.
