Local musician and 2009 eThekwini Living Legend PJ Powers has always been involved in charity work throughout South Africa. In 2016, she became the ambassador for the mentorship programme for a nonprofit organization named Khulisa Social Solutions.

One of Power’s first outings with Khulisa took her to Freedom Square in Kliptown, Soweto. She was alarmed by the contrast between the Freedom Charter Monument and the shacks. PJ is a Soweto girl so this remained close to her heart which is why she feels joining Khulisa was a step in the right direction.

Walk in My Shoes, a campaign Khulisa launched recently in partnership with the Thuli Madonsela Foundation, is an invitation for underprivileged people to tell their stories. Powers believes the extraordinary resilience of people across Africa can be channelled into personal power.

Powers’s international reputation is expected to help in signing up more mentors. An international media campaign will attempt to link the song with expatriates, giving them an opportunity to give back.
