Cape Town may be referred to as the ‘Mother City’, but it seems that Durban’s the head of the household when it comes to South Africa’s most liveable city! For the third year running Durban has been voted as the the South African city with the highest quality of life, according to Mercer’s 2017 Quality of Living Survey. The survey, which is used by multinational companies as a benchmark for paying employees working abroad, considers things such as access to transportation‚ reliable electricity‚ and drinkable water when ranking countries. The political climate and economic stability are also factors taken into account.

In this year’s survey Durban came out ahead of both Cape Town and Johannesburg, which were ranked 94th and 96th respectively, out of a total of 231 cities. This is great news for the eThekwini Municipality which aims to be Africa’s most liveable and caring city by the year 2030 – at this rate it looks like it might just get there a bit sooner than planned!
