By 2030 eThekwini Municipality aims to be Africa’s most liveable and caring city. Efficient and useful public services are one of the ways that the municipality can improve residents’ experience of the city, and in line with this thinking container libraries have been erected in Gugu Dlamini Park, next door to Durban’s popular Workshop shopping centre.

The semi-permanent structures, which offer visitors free WiFi, access to current newspapers and a book exchange, are part of a larger project, the New Durban Central City (NDCC) Library Research Hub. The NDCC Library, which will be constructed in the same location as the current container libraries, constitutes an investment of approximately R500m by government, and is one of the means by which the municipality hopes to regenerate the Inner City.

The container libraries, which first opened in August 2014, reopened on the 1st August this year, with residents welcome to visit the library from Monday to Saturday.
