Dr Paddy Kearney and Brother Jude Pieterse, St Augustine’s College, 5th May 2017

We may be a day late, but it’s never too late to celebrate our legends, and with that we announce our Legend of the Month for May, Dr Paddy Kearney! Kearney, who was awarded the title of Doctorate when he received an honorary degree from the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2009, has once again been recognised for his outstanding community service, this time with the Bonum Commune Award from St Augustine’s College in Johannesburg, a second doctorate, and the highest accolade that can be conferred by the college.

Bonum commune communitatis is Latin and translates to ‘common good of the community’, which is exactly what the award recognises. Professor Douglas Irvine, an old friend of Kearney’s who read the citation, talked of his dedication to helping the indigent, the invaluable contribution that Kearney made during the apartheid struggle, and his role in the establishment of both the Diakonia and the Denis Hurley Centre.

On behalf of eThekwini Municipality we would like to say congratulations to Dr Paddy Kearney! We can’t think of anyone more deserving of this prestigious award.
