It sounds like a line from a television drama, but sometimes kids really do need something to keep them off the streets, especially children from low income households, who aren’t offered the same opportunities that more privileged children receive in the form of extramural activities after school. So the work that 2016 eThekwini Living Legend, Obed Gumede has done for the past 40 years really is invaluable!
For nearly twenty years Gumede coached a development soccer team that groomed township players for the National Premier Soccer League, eventually moving onto his first love, boxing. Since his retirement – Gumede is now the sprightly age of 84 – this ex-Lightweight Champion boxer has dedicated himself full time to training young up-and-coming boxers, producing a healthy number of provincial boxing champions.
More than just winning a trophy, Gumede believes that the discipline that boxing instills in the young and boys and girls that he takes under his wing, is the real prize for these children, many of whom have gone on to achieve great things.
The eThekwini Municipality thanks Obed Gumede for his decades of service to the children of Umlazi. Their lives are all the better for Gumede’s commitment and drive.
