Typically when we think of aid agencies we imagine them working in war-torn countries or helping out when disaster strikes, but what happens to the people left behind once the hype has died down, and people have moved onto the next news story? Gift of the Givers, recipients of a 2016 Living Legends award, provide ongoing to support to people who need it most, like the learners at Marikana Primary School. An area already punished by poverty was worsened by the trauma of the death of 34 Lonmin miners on the 16th August 2012. The death of the miners also meant that families were left without their primary breadwinners, amplifying already difficult circumstances.
National broadcasters, SAFM, teamed up with Gift of the Givers today to offer much-needed support to Marikana Primary School. The NPO visited the school to deliver food packages and stationery to the learners, as well as mobile library carts to assist the school.
A massive thank you to Gift of the Givers for continuing to help those South Africans who aren’t able to help themselves.
