Rescue workers search for missing child in Alexandra

The summer rains have finally come, and while South Africa is in desperate need of rainfall, certain areas could have done with it being a bit drier this week! Ethekwini Living Legends awardee, Give of the Givers, have had their hands full in Johannesburg where they have been offering emergency assistance to those worse affected by the flash floods that hit the city on Wednesday. Hundreds of people in the township of Alexandra have been displaced by the rain which destroyed homes, and took the lives of at least four people, with a three year old child still missing. Gift of the Givers have responded by preparing meals in the morning and evening for up to 1000 people at a time, as well as collecting clothes and baby supplies for families who have lost everything to the rains.

If you’re in Johannesburg, or have friends or family in Joburg who are able to help, Gift of the Givers are taking in food and clothing donations at their Bramley depot (details below). Once the donated goods have been sorted they are immediately delivered by hand to the various families in Alex. Gift of the Givers are calling for donations of canned foods (pilchards, baked beans etc), long life milk, nappies, and clothes – specifically clothes for babies and infants.
